What is the Definition of Instrument Landing System

An Instrument Landing System (ILS) is a ground-based radio navigation system that provides precise guidance to aircraft during the final approach and landing phase. It consists of two primary components: the localizer, which offers lateral (horizontal) guidance, and the glideslope, which provides vertical descent information.

ILS is critical for ensuring safe landings, especially in poor visibility or adverse weather conditions. It enables pilots to align accurately with the runway and maintain the correct descent path. Widely used at commercial airports, ILS enhances flight safety and operational efficiency in both manned and autonomous aviation systems.

Key Components of Instrument Landing System

  • Localizer (LLZ) – Provides lateral guidance, helping the aircraft align with the centerline of the runway during approach.
  • Glideslope (GS) – Offers vertical guidance to ensure the correct descent angle (typically around 3°) toward the runway.
  • Marker Beacons – Transmit signals at specific points along the approach path to indicate distance from the runway (outer, middle, and inner markers).
  • Approach Lighting System (ALS) – A series of lights that assist pilots visually during final approach, especially in low-visibility conditions.
  • Runway Visual Range (RVR) Sensors – Measure the visibility conditions on the runway and provide critical landing data.
  • Aircraft Receiver – Onboard avionics that decode ILS signals and present course and glidepath information to the pilot or autopilot.
  • Frequency Pairing – Each ILS system operates on specific VHF frequencies to avoid interference and ensure signal clarity.
  • Back Course – The reverse localizer signal for approaches from the opposite direction, though without glideslope information.
  • Decision Height (DH) – The minimum altitude at which a pilot must decide to continue the approach or execute a missed approach.
