Slant Range

What is the definition of slant range?
Slant range (also known as slant distance) is the line-of-sight distance between two points that are not at the same elevation.
Using a boat and an AUV (both equipped with USBL technology) as an example, the slant range would be the hypotenuse of the triangle created between the depth of the AUV and the horizontal distance the AUV has moved away from the boat. In more simple terms, the slant range can be considered as the “diagonal” line distance between the boat and the AUV.

The slant range is represented by the line marked with a number 1 in the diagram above.
