What is the definition of RMS?

Stands for root mean square. In engineering, RMS a meaningful way of calculating the average of values over a period of time, such as calculating average or continuous power.

As an example, the signal value (amplitude) is squared, then averaged over a period of time. The square root of the average signal amplitude is calculated – when this value is squared, it is proportional to the effective power of the signal.
