What is the definition of course?

The direction that a vehicle (typically ships and aircraft) is travelling with reference to the path or track on the ground. This is not to be confused with heading, which is the direction that the vehicle is pointing. For example, the course of an aircraft can be different to its heading due to crosswinds etc. that skew the heading of the vehicle with regard the direction of travel, which is also known as “yaw”.
