What is the definition of checksum?

A means of validating transmitted data against corruption or alteration by using the bit content of the original data to mathematically derive a unique value that represents the data. On reception of the data, the checksum is recalculated and compared to the received checksum to ensure that the original data has been received correctly and in its entirety.
