The angular distance, measured in a clockwise direction with reference to North, a celestial body or object. For example, a star due East has an azimuth of 90°, a star due West 270°, a star due South 180° and a star due North 0°. Note that azimuth and bearing are terms that are sometimes interchanged, however, there is a difference (see bearing).
Advanced Navigation’s glossary covers the most common terms and definitions used in inertial navigation systems, acoustic positioning and robotics.
